They had strong potential to do well on Google Ads, because of their strong brand name in the industry, and because they sell high-end, high margin filming equipment with a very strong AOV (£300+).
This meant we had lots of head room in our profitable ROAS to run ads. However they had previously struggled to make Google Ads work, due to the long conversion lag and B2B sales cycle of buying high end filming equipment.
We knew the brand was strong, and the website was converting well and doing healthy turnover, but Google Ads didn’t look profitable.
We implemented margin based bidding on Google Shopping with custom labels and a feed setup. This allowed us to minimise spend on low margin accessories whilst maximising on profit driving products.
With in platform purchases not looking healthy, we also set up bidding towards an add-to-cart rather than purchase. Whilst this runs counter to best practice, it gave the bid strategy something to optimise towards, as previously it had nothing.
Whilst platform purchases were low, add to carts were being captured. Purchases were undervalued due to a conversion cycle longer than 7 days and high AOV.
We looked at MeR to measure performance over a longer time frame, and could see these conversions being captured by organic/direct traffic.
